Guide to the Small Town of Willits in Mendocino County, Northern California
Tucked between towering redwood forests and rolling Northern California hills, Willits is one of those small towns that instantly slows your pace. Known as the “Gateway to the Redwoods,” this laid-back community in the heart of Mendocino County blends old railroad history, rugged outdoor beauty, quirky roadside charm, and classic small-town California character.
While many travelers pass through on Highway 101 on their way to Fort Bragg on the Mendocino Coast, Willits deserves more than just a quick stop for gas and coffee. The town has quietly become a Northern California underrated destination, especially for families, road trippers, train lovers, and anyone craving a slower style of travel.
From riding through ancient forests on the famous Skunk Train to exploring a local brewery, browsing quirky shops, eating classic roadside burgers, and using the town as a basecamp for redwood adventures, there’s much more to Willits than first meets the eye.

Where Is Willits?
Willits is located in inland Mendocino County along Highway 101, about two and a half hours north of San Francisco and roughly two hours west of Sacramento depending on traffic. The town sits in Little Lake Valley and has a population of just under 5,000 residents.
One of the biggest reasons travelers love staying in Willits is its central location. You can easily explore multiple Northern California destinations from here:
- Downtown Willits
- Mendocino Coast and Fort Bragg
- Anderson Valley wine country
- Redwoods and hiking trails
- Scenic Highway 20 drives
- Inland Mendocino County
For many Northern California road trippers, Willits becomes the perfect overnight stop between the Bay Area and the coast.

Our Family Long Weekend Trip to Willits
My husband and I have traveled with the kids twice to Willits, once in the May springtime, and another time in October for fall festivities. We are home based in Sacramento, and it’s about a 3-hour road trip up north-west for us. The drive up to Mendocino County has always been scenic and calm (especially when you compare it to our road trips down south through the Los Angeles area!).
This past trip we did a 3-day weekend, adding on a hiking and beach day in Fort Bragg. We also planned a double dose of Skunk Train adventures – first the brand new Railcoaster Railbikes experience, and then an evening Skunk Train Highball Express. This last trip we did an overnight in Willits, which gave us the opportunity to do more exploring in this small old west town.

The Quiet Appeal of the Small Town of Willits
What makes Willits special is that it still feels authentic. Unlike some California tourist towns that have become overly polished or crowded, Willits keeps its historic rural character intact. There’s also something nostalgic about the town. The old railroad history, cowboy culture, and logging heritage still shape much of Willits’ identity today. In many ways, it feels like not much time has passed in the last few decades, especially juxtaposition to ultra-modern cities like San Francisco.

Where To Stay in Willits
Many visitors to the area like to use Willits as their home base to visit attractions in Mendocino County, along with staying locally to explore the town. Also, if you are trying to budget for your road trip, hotel rooms are cheaper in Willits than if you were booking a place on the coast.
The Old West Inn
A particularly memorable option is The Old West Inn, a themed boutique motel with creatively designed western-style rooms. The motel embraces a playful frontier atmosphere while still offering modern conveniences, making it especially popular for road trippers and families.
The Woodrose
Recently renovated with a clean, modern aesthetic, The Woodrose offers a stylish boutique-style stay in the heart of Willits. The updated property blends nostalgic roadside motel charm with contemporary design, featuring refreshed rooms, modern amenities, and a comfortable atmosphere that feels far more upscale than a typical highway stop.
Creekside Inn & Suites
Creekside Inn is where we stayed during our visit to Willits. It’s also a recently refreshed hotel near downtown, with updated rooms and modern amenities. It’s very affordable (around $100 a night!) and still feels more upscale than your typical motel. It also has a pool and a hot tub for relaxing after a day of redwood adventures.

What is the Best Time of Year to Visit Willits?
The answer… anytime is a good time to visit Willits! This town can be visited year-round, but spring and fall are often considered the most beautiful seasons thanks to the mild weather and scenic landscapes.
Spring brings bright green hills, blooming wildflowers, and cooler temperatures that are perfect for hiking and exploring the redwoods. The surrounding countryside feels especially lush during this time of year.
Summer is the busiest travel season, with warm weather, rodeos, community events, and family-friendly activities happening throughout town. It’s a great time for train rides and outdoor adventures.
Fall offers beautiful golden light, crisp mornings, and fewer crowds compared to summer. The changing colors and peaceful atmosphere make it one of the prettiest times to visit Mendocino County.
Winter brings a cozy small-town atmosphere to Willits, along with dramatic forest scenery and seasonal holiday train rides. Rainy days can make the surrounding redwoods feel especially magical.
Because Willits is located inland, temperatures are often warmer than the Mendocino Coast while still remaining cooler than many inland Northern California valleys farther south. So it’s kind of a sweet spot for perfect weather!

The Famous Skunk Train Experience
No trip to Willits is complete without visiting Skunk Train. Our family has ridden this train twice, and even rode railbikes up the mountain too!
Originally built in the late 1800s to transport lumber through the redwoods, the Skunk Train has become one of the most iconic train rides in California. Today, visitors can board beautifully restored railcars and travel through massive redwood forests, historic tunnels, and remote wilderness areas inaccessible by car.
While you can also catch another Skunk Train in Fort Bragg, the Willits departure offers a completely different atmosphere than the coastal route. The inland ride feels quieter, more historic, and deeply connected to the region’s railroad past.
One of the best parts of the Willits route is how quickly the scenery changes. Within minutes of leaving town, the train winds into dense forests with filtered sunlight, towering trees, and dramatic canyon views. This town really is the gateway to the redwoods!

Visit the Mendocino County Museum
If the rugged history of Northern California really interests you, the Mendocino County Museum should be your next stop. This local museum showcases the history of Mendocino County through exhibits focused on logging history, railroad culture, native American heritage, agriculture, local businesses and historic artifacts.
In fact, the museum houses more than 60,000 artifacts and rotating exhibits that help tell the story of Northern California’s past century. What makes the museum especially interesting is how connected it feels to the identity of Willits itself. Railroad history, timber industries, and ranching all played major roles in shaping the town.
Families traveling with children will appreciate that the museum is very chill and not overwhelming. It’s easy to explore in an hour or two before heading to other attractions nearby.

Explore the Historic Downtown Willits Area
Downtown Willits has that classic Northern California small-town atmosphere that’s becoming harder to find. One landmark you’ll quickly notice is the famous Willits arch downtown featuring the phrase “Gateway to the Redwoods.”
Downtown Willits is filled with historic storefronts, vintage neon signs, and charming old brick buildings that give the town a nostalgic small-town western feel. As you explore, you’ll also find cozy local coffee shops, art galleries, and antique stores tucked throughout the downtown area. Note, Commercial Street especially feels like stepping into another era, which is where the Mendocino Museum is located.

Where to Eat While in Willits
One thing I really noticed during our visits to Willits is that there aren’t a ton of chain restaurants, but rather a lot of local mom-and-pop style eateries. Which is great! In my opinion it’s way better to try out the locally made eats, rather than eating something you could find anywhere. Below I’ve listed out some local favorites, including places we’ve been ourselves.
El Chicano Restaurant
One longtime local favorite is El Chicano Restaurant, known for generous portions, classic Mexican comfort food, and a relaxed family-friendly atmosphere.
101 Drive-In
Travelers driving through town also frequently stop at 101 Drive-In, a beloved roadside burger stand that has become something of a local institution. The restaurant has built a loyal following thanks to its nostalgic charm and classic burgers.
Loose Caboose Cafe
Loose Caboose Cafe is a local institution since 1988. Known for their “Specialty Caboose Subs” served on toasted French rolls, this is the go-to spot for a pre-hike lunch. Try the Santa Fe Chicken or the legendary Grandma Pieretti’s Meatball Sandwich.
The Buzzard’s Roost
Our family stopped in for lunch at The Buzzard’s Roost, located right on the main road. We were particularly craving cheeseburgers and fries, and this restaurant really hit the spot. It was a lively atmosphere with other families enjoying a meal, and we sat outside to view the Main Street.
Kelly’s Diner
For breakfast we were looking for a kid-friendly spot where they served classic pancakes and waffles. We definitely found what we were looking for at Kelly’s Diner. Also located on Main Street, this slightly more modern diner served a stack of pancakes for my husband, a Mickey Mouse themed pancake breakfast for my son, and waffles with strawberries and whipped cream for my daughter.
Flying Dog Pizza
Flying Dog Wood Fired Pizza & Vinyl is a creative pizza spot in downtown Willits known for its wood-fired pizzas, relaxed atmosphere, and unique collection of vinyl records. With inventive specialty pizzas, and a fun music-inspired vibe, it has become a favorite stop for both locals and travelers.

Northspur Brewing Co. – Craft Beer Plus a Tour!
During my visit to Willits, we all met up at the Northspur Brewing Co. for a happy hour and brewery tour led by the owners. The brewery is best known for its flagship IPA No. 3, a tropical and resinous West Coast IPA, as well as popular rotating selections like the Probability Cloud Hazy IPA and the crisp Mendo Summer Kölsch. During the tour we even got the chance to taste test the malted grains that they use to brew their beers. Note: they also have kombucha if you’re looking for a non-alcoholic beverage.

The Willits Farmers Market
Held on Thursday afternoons (seasonally), the Willits Famers Market is the best place to experience the town’s agricultural roots. Expect organic produce, local honey, and live bluegrass music.

Ridgewood Ranch
Known as the home and final resting place of the legendary racehorse Seabiscuit, this historic ranch offers tours of the Stud Barn Museum where Seabiscuit lived, including his stall. In more modern times, the Ridgewood Ranch offers nature walks and hikes, camping an on-site events.

Brooktrails Golf Course
Located just a few miles up the hill from downtown, Brooktrails offers a 9-hole course literally carved out of the forest. Even if you don’t golf, the surrounding hiking trails wind through thick redwood groves and offer cool, shaded retreats during the summer heat.

A Perfect Base for Exploring the Redwoods
One of the biggest advantages of staying in Willits is its location near some of Northern California’s most beautiful forests. The town sits near the beginning of Mendocino County’s extensive redwood regions when approaching from the south.
From Willits, you can easily access:
- Montgomery Woods State Natural Reserve
- Mendocino National Forest
- Drive an hour to Van Damme State Park
Spring and fall are especially beautiful seasons to visit because temperatures stay mild and the surrounding landscapes become incredibly green or have colorful fall foliage.

During the festival, operable historic equipment is brought to life with roaring engines, towering plumes of steam, and the unmistakable sound of steam whistles filling the air.

What to Pack for Your Trip to Mendocino County
Packing for a trip to Mendocino County means preparing for everything from cool coastal weather and redwood hikes to sunny small-town exploring and scenic road trips.
Pack Layers of Clothing
In the Little Lake Valley, mornings can be foggy and 50°F, while afternoons frequently hit 90°F. If you’re taking the Skunk Train, the canyon stays significantly cooler than the town—bring a jacket. Basically, you need to be prepared for weather fluctuations that will require you to add a layer, or remove a layer, depending on your planned activities.
Proper Footwear
Outdoor-friendly footwear is essential when visiting Willits, especially if you plan to explore hiking trails, redwood forests, and local outdoor attractions. Sturdy walking shoes or hiking boots are ideal for navigating uneven terrain, damp forest paths, and scenic adventures throughout Mendocino County.

Additional Things to Keep in Mind When Visiting Willits
Drive Slowly and Safely
If you’re heading west on Highway 20 toward Fort Bragg, be prepared for narrow, winding roads (along with stunning views). Make sure to drive slowly, and pull over to let other cars pass.
Bring Bug Spray
Packing mosquito bug spray is a smart idea when visiting Willits, especially if you plan to spend time near forests, rivers, hiking trails, or other outdoor areas. I got eaten alive by mosquitos during our outdoor dinner!

In Conclusion: Why Willits Is Worth Adding To Your Northern California Road Trip
Many travelers initially discover Willits as a stop along Highway 101, but for some curious visitors, it becomes much more than a pit stop.
Between the historic railroad culture, giant redwoods, local restaurants, quirky roadside charm, museums, festivals, and slower pace of life, Willits offers a version of California travel that feels increasingly rare. It’s not flashy or overly commercialized. Instead, Willits gives visitors something much harder to find: authenticity.
Whether you’re boarding the Skunk Train, exploring Mendocino County Museum, grabbing burgers after a long drive, or simply admiring the enormous redwood trees, Willits has a way of making Northern California feel like time has stopped.
