The Skunk Train Highball Express: A Full Guide to Plan Your Experience

Introduction: A Different Kind of Redwood Adventure
If you’ve ever dreamed of riding a vintage train through towering redwoods—but with a modern twist—the Highball Express Skunk Train delivers exactly that.
Unlike traditional scenic train rides, the Skunk Train Highball Express blends classic rail travel, local drinks, and a lively social atmosphere into one unforgettable experience. It’s part sightseeing, part celebration, and completely unique to Northern California’s Mendocino region.
Running out of Willits, California, this ride takes you deep into the forest, over historic tracks dating back to the 1800s, and into landscapes that feel completely untouched by time. California Western Railroad has been operating since 1885, originally built to haul redwood logs—and today, it offers one of the most immersive ways to experience the region.
Whether you’re planning a family outing, a date night, or a weekend escape, this guide will walk you through everything you need to know.

What Is the Skunk Train Highball Express?
In short, the Highball Express is a 2–3 hour roundtrip train experience departing from Willits, California. But in reality, there’s so much more to it.
Here’s what makes it stand out:
- The truest feelings of nostalgia and old-timey entertainment
- The train travels over the highest elevation point on the Skunk Train route, giving you a variety of scenic views
- Winds through a fun and dark tunnel (this is especially fun when you’re on the open air section of the train
- Features a lively onboard atmosphere with drinks and snacks available for purchase
- Includes a scenic stop at Crowley to enjoy time alfresco around flaming fire pits, play lawn games, explore the forest and relax
It’s not just about the scenery—it’s about the experience. Think of it as a moving lounge through the redwoods, with a delicious dinner waiting for you at the end!

Our Family’s Adventure Weekend in Willits
In early May, our family decided to venture from our home city of Sacramento up north to Mendocino County. We made it a 3-day weekend by adding on one day in Fort Bragg. We were lucky enough to partake in not only one, but two Skunk Train experiences!
In the morning we tried out the brand new Skunk Train Railcoaster Railbikes, which I highly recommend for anyone who loves a hands-on adventure. And then later in the evening we embarked on the Skunk Train Highball Express. It was nice to relax on the train after previously pedaling up the mountain (don’t worry, the railbikes are electric assisted so it’s not too strenuous).
This is not the first Skunk Train experience we’ve done as a family. In the autumn season we did the Skunk Train Pumpkin Express, where the kids got to pick out pumpkins at a festively decorated pumpkin patch. Every experience is unique tailored to a particular audience. On this particular Highball Express ride, dinner and s’mores were included at our stop in Crowley. Scroll through all our photos to get a feel for experience, along with our guide that will answer most frequently asked questions.

What to Expect on the Ride
1. Departure from Willits
The journey begins at the Willits depot, located just off Highway 101. This inland starting point gives the Highball Express access to some of the most dramatic forest terrain on the line.
Plan to arrive at least 30 minutes early to check in and get settled before departure.
2. The Scenic Climb
As the train pulls away, you’ll gradually climb into the redwoods. The landscape gradually shifts from rolling hills into dense forest. Sunlight becomes softer as it filters through towering trees. Open views give way to narrow canyon passages. This portion of the ride showcases why the Skunk Train is considered one of the most scenic rail routes in California.
3. The Onboard Experience
This is where the Skunk Train Highball Express truly sets itself apart.
Onboard, you’ll find:
- A selection of local craft beers, wines, and cocktails
- Snacks available for purchase
- Open-air and indoor seating options
- A relaxed, social atmosphere
Unlike quieter scenic trains, the vibe here is fun and upbeat—perfect for groups or couples looking for something more interactive.
4. The Crowley Stop
Midway through the journey, the train stops at Crowley, a peaceful redwood clearing.
Here’s what you can expect:
- Time to get off the train and explore
- Fire pits and seating areas
- Opportunities for photos among the redwoods
- A chance to relax and stretch your legs
Our family enjoyed an extended version of the experience with a full dinner and s’mores for dessert.
5. The Return Journey
After your stop, you’ll board the train again for the return trip to Willits. This is often when people settle in, sip another drink, and simply enjoy the ride back through the canyon.

How Long Is the Skunk Train Highball Express?
The full experience typically lasts:
- 2 to 3 hours total
- Includes a stop at Crowley
- Roundtrip from Willits
This makes it a perfect half-day activity—long enough to feel immersive, but short enough to pair with other plans.

Tickets & Pricing
At this time, the Skunk Train Highball Express is operating on a limited schedule, with tickets currently available only on Saturdays at 5:00 PM. Each ticket is priced at $78.05 per person.
Because availability is limited to a single weekly departure, these tickets can sell out quickly—especially during peak travel seasons. It’s a good idea to book in advance to secure your spot.
Be sure to check the official Skunk Train website for any updates to the schedule, additional dates, or seasonal ride offerings.

What to Wear (Very Important)
This isn’t a typical indoor attraction—dress for the outdoors.
Recommended:
- Comfortable layers (temperatures change in the forest, plus you’ll be spending time outdoors)
- An extra warm layer for night trains
- Closed-toe shoes
- Light jacket or hoodie
- Sunglasses for open-air cars
Keep in mind:
Open-air cars can expose you to dust or soot from the engine, so avoid delicate clothing.

Food & Drinks: What You Should Know
You have two options:
Bring Your Own
- Snacks and non-alcoholic drinks are allowed
Buy Onboard
- Beer, wine, cocktails
- Light snacks
Important note: Outside alcohol is not permitted

Is the Highball Express Kid-Friendly?
Yes—but it depends on your expectations.
Great for:
- Families with older kids
- Kids who enjoy trains and nature
- Relaxed, scenic outings
Keep in Mind:
- The atmosphere can be more social and lively than other train rides
- There’s no structured kids entertainment
If you want a quieter, more kid-focused experience, consider alternatives like the Wolf Tree Turn.

Getting to Willits in Mendocino County
The Highball Express departs from Willits, a small town tucked along Highway 101 and surrounded by redwood forest.
From Sacramento
The drive takes about 3 to 3.5 hours, depending on traffic and your route. Since we live in Sacramento, this is a trip we make a couple times a year, and it’s one of those drives that we’ve become very familiar with. It’s an easy road trip to turn into a full weekend getaway.
From San Francisco
Expect a drive of about 2.5 to 3 hours. The route typically takes you over the Golden Gate Bridge and through scenic Northern California countryside before reaching Willits. It’s a popular escape from the city for a reason—peaceful, scenic, and a complete change of pace.
From Mendocino or Fort Bragg
If you’re staying along the coast, plan for about a 45-minute to 1-hour inland drive to reach Willits. The winding road through the redwoods is beautiful, but allow extra time if you’re not used to curvy mountain roads.
There is free parking available at the Willits depot, and the area is easy to navigate once you arrive.
