Pumpkin Express Skunk Train in Willits – A Mendocino County Autumn Gem

Every autumn, the historic Skunk Train in Willits transforms into a magical fall adventure known as the Pumpkin Express, offering families and visitors a nostalgic journey through the heart of Mendocino County’s redwood forests. With the golden hues of autumn all around, the Pumpkin Express blends the beauty of the season with the charm of one of California’s oldest railroads. This festive train ride, complete with a visit to a pumpkin patch, is a tradition that captures the essence of fall in Northern California, making it an experience for anyone seeking a unique and fun-filled seasonal daytrip.

The History of the Skunk Train

The Skunk Train, originally built as a logging railroad in 1885, is a piece of history that still winds through the picturesque landscapes of Northern California. Named for the odor of its early gasoline-powered railcars (a smell that, according to legend, lingered longer than the train was visible), the Skunk Train is more than just a ride—it’s a step back in time. Passengers aboard this iconic locomotive travel through towering redwoods, over bridges, and along winding streams, all while soaking in the rich natural beauty of Mendocino County.

During the fall season, this experience is transformed into the Pumpkin Express, an autumn-inspired journey that not only showcases the breathtaking fall foliage but also offers a festive celebration of the season.

Skunk Train Has Multiple Locations

It’s important to note that the Skunk Train has multiple departure locations. There’s one train departing from Willits and another from Fort Bragg. They are both located in Mendocino County. Make sure to pay attention to the selected departure location when you buy your tickets.

Willits Depot Station is located at: 299 E Commercial St, Willits, CA 95490

Fort Bragg Depot Station is located at: 100 W Laurel St, Fort Bragg, CA 95437

The Pumpkin Express Experience

Departing from the Willits Depot, the Pumpkin Express is a fun, family-friendly train ride that blends the magic of autumn with the charm of a vintage train. The ride itself is scenic and serene, taking passengers deep into the heart of Mendocino’s redwood forest, where the canopy of trees glows in rich autumnal hues. The cool, crisp air and the scent of pine trees add to the sensory delight.

Once aboard, passengers of all ages are treated to a festive autumn atmosphere. The train is often decked out in fall decorations, complete with pumpkins, hay bales, and colorful garlands. Children (and adults!) can wear costumes, and there are fun, interactive activities during the ride, like face painting and games.

One of the highlights of the journey is when the train stops at the pumpkin patch, where each passenger has the opportunity to pick their own pumpkin. Whether you’re looking for the perfect pumpkin for carving or a tiny gourd to decorate your mantle, this stop adds an extra layer of fun to the trip.

After everyone has selected their pumpkin, the train resumes its journey, allowing passengers to relax and enjoy the scenic ride back to Willits while sipping on hot cider or nibbling on festive treats available to purchase on board.

Planning Your Visit to the Skunk Train

One of the best ways to enjoy your trip on the Skunk Train is to know ahead of time all the details so you can plan accordingly. Below I have listed out key points to consider, plus some advice from myself who just recently rode the Pumpkin Express Skunk Train on October 5th.

Pumpkin Express Fall Dates and Booking Your Tickets

The Pumpkin Express runs on the weekends and Wednesdays throughout the month of October, making it the perfect autumn outing for those looking to celebrate the season in style. Tickets are available online, and it’s a good idea to book in advance, as this popular attraction tends to sell out quickly. Visitors can choose from a variety of departure times, making it easy to fit into a weekend getaway or day trip to Mendocino County.

Food and Drinks on the Skunk Train

I highly suggest you eat a full meal before boarding the Skunk Train. While they do have some light snacks and drinks available for purchase, there isn’t any proper meals that will fill you up. The last thing you want is to have cranky kids because they’re hungry (or hangry adults either!). They did have complimentary apple juice for riders on the train.

How Long Does the Skunk Train Last?

I would plan for about 3 hours total for this experience. They start boarding the train about 30 minutes prior to the departure time. The train goes out to the pumpkin patch, and then back again, for about 2.5 hours. Give yourself enough of a buffer so you can take your time and not feel rushed.

Are There Restrooms on the Skunk Train?

When you arrive at the train depot, there’s restrooms available to passengers. There’s also restrooms onboard the train.

Indoor and Outdoor Train Cars

I recommend passengers wear clothing layers on the train ride. There’s both indoor and outdoor train cars, and the outside cars may be a bit chilly and breezy. It’s fun to experience the outdoor cars for a little bit, and then settle down inside the indoor cars and watch from the windows.

The Skunk Train is Dog-Friendly!

You can bring along your well-behaved dogs on the Skunk Train! They must be on a leash at all times and you will have to pay $12.49 for their ticket.

How Much Does the Skunk Train Cost?

Each passenger over the age of 13 must pay $68.35 (kids under 13 are free!). Each ticket comes with a pumpkin that you can select from the pumpkin patch.

If you want to book the Cab Ride experience where you ride with the engineer in the cab, it costs $295. This is only for adults over 18 years and older.
