If you’re looking for one of the most beautiful and family-friendly hikes on the Mendocino Coast, the Fern Canyon Scenic Trail inside Van Damme State Park deserves a spot at the very top of your list. Where Is Fern Canyon Scenic Trail?

Fern Canyon Scenic Trail is located inside Van Damme State Park near the small coastal town of Little River, just a few minutes south of Fort Bragg and north of Mendocino. The trail begins near the campground area of the state park, at the very end of the main road in the park. When we arrived, we asked the park ranger at the pay booth for instructions, and he was very helpful. It was simple instructions and turned out to be very to access.

Our Family Hike

We decided to head to Mendocino County for a 3-day weekend at the beginning of May. Our stops included Fort Bragg and the small town of Willits. I did some research to find the easiest hiking train for my two kids (ages 5 and 7). I knew that they wouldn’t be able to last very long on a steep or extra long trail, and finding Fern Canyon was just perfect. We hiked about 45 minutes out, and then another 45 minutes back. The kids had a lot of fun finding banana slugs, walking over the bridges, throwing rocks in the stream and walking among giant trees. After our hike, we headed to the beach which is also in Van Damme State Park.

There’s a fairly large parking lot at the head of the trail. It was almost empty when we arrived in early May, but I’m not how it would be during peak summer travel season. Arriving earlier in the day is always a good idea during summer weekends and holiday periods.

Because the park is part of the California State Parks system, visitors should expect a day-use $10 entrance fee unless they have a state park pass.

The answer is definitely not stroller friendly. While the terrain is flat, it is not necessarily smooth and I think you could easily break off one of your wheels (this has happened to us many times while traveling and it’s the worst!). For families with babies or toddlers, a child carrier or hiking backpack carrier is usually the easiest option.

Full Loop Hike for Adults

Experienced hikers can combine the Fern Canyon Scenic Trail with Old Logging Road Trail and the pygmy forest area for a much longer adventure. The complete loop is several miles long and includes more elevation gain.

The Perfect Cool Weather Summer Hike

Even during warmer months, the redwood forest provides plenty of shade. The canyon stays cool and damp, making this a great summer hiking option for families. Not to mention the fact that it’s located along the coastline, which is always cooler than inland temperatures.
