Guide to Visiting Monterey Car Week – Everything You Need to Plan Your Visit

Monterey Car Week. What else can be added to this historic festival, a pilgrimage for all automotive enthusiasts? It is the most important car event in the world, and it lasts for an entire week. It’s an annual event that celebrates automotive excellence. Its significance goes reaches an importance at a global scale. Why is it wildly popular? It’s an event that is lined up somewhere in between history and innovation. Automakers make their biggest new car reveals at this event hoping to feed off the hype and automotive frenzy.

For me, it’s an opportunity to indulge in my love of cars for an entire week, listening to them roar through the streets of Monterey. The first weekend of the festival is so electric, with the constant influx of new exotic and vintage classics taking over the city, definitely a fun experience if you’re a car enthusiast.

What is Monterey Car Week?

The event doesn’t begin and end with each specific show, the occasion is a weeklong affair as you’ll have the pleasure of seeing classic cars and hyper exotic cars roaming the streets for your entire stay. This was the part that made Monterey Car Week so special for me. Seeing a special car, like an Enzo Ferrari at an event while parked is great, but seeing an Enzo out in the wild, driving around in the street is even better. You get to see the car in its natural habitat, like seeing a tiger out in the jungle instead of the zoo, it elevates the experience. This happened every single day. It’s a car spotters wet dream and that’s not an exaggeration.

Carmel Car Show Introduction

Now you understand that Monterey Car Week is a big deal, and that it’s some kind of car event, but what is Monterey Car Week exactly? Well, it’s a festival built out in a collection of car events, car shows and scenic drives on the world-famous highway 1 in California. Throughout the week there are multiple car events happening in Monterey, most specifically happening in Carmel.

There is also a historic racing event called the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion at Laguna Seca. Featuring vintage race cars from Le Mans, Formula 1, and Can-Am racing and battling on the iconic Corkscrew turn at Seca, something I’m sure many car enthusiasts can appreciate. In addition to car events of this nature, there are also car auctions hosted by RM Sotheby’s, Gooding & Company, among others. If you’ve got the deep pockets, then you’ll have even more fun at these events!

We’ll go into more detail for each event, but here is a list of the most important shows that happen yearly during Monterey Car Week:

  • Pebble Beach Tour D’Elegance
  • Pebble Beach Concours D’Elegance
  • The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering
  • Concorso Italiano
  • Legends of the Autobahn
  • Porsche Werks Reunion
  • Exotics on Broadway

Time of Year and Location Car Show Takes Places

Monterey Car Week takes place in August every year. Usually from the 2nd week of August until the end of that week on a Sunday. There is a special kick-off event that happens on the first Saturday of the festival (sometimes it’s on Friday). It’s called the Monterey Car Week Kick-off and starts the festival with a classic car show in downtown Monterey. The week culminates with the prestigious Pebble Beach Concours D’Elegance on Sunday. All of these events are happening in various locations throughout Monterey, I’ll put location information on each event to make it more legible for you.

Overview of Events You Can Expect to See at Monterey Car Week

Let’s go over the most notable events in more detail to see what awaits at each event.

Pebble Beach Tours D’Elegance

This happens Thursday and is a 17-mile scenic drive along the Pacific Coast Highway featuring the vintage classics that will be competing in the Concourse D’Elegance. The cars (150+ cars) start lining up at 7am and leave for Big Sur at 9:30am. The event is free to the public. The cars line up specifically at the intersections of Portola Road and Stevenson Drive, near the Concours Village in Pebble Beach. Spectators are welcomed to see them line up at the Concours Village before the classics begin their drive. Another option is to watch the cars pass through the tour on the many points of preference down the 17-mile stretch of the Pacific Coast Highway.

Pebble Beach Concours D’Elegance

The grand finale, the most important and prestigious car show event of the week. Not to be confused with the tour, this specific concours event is considered the pinnacle of automotive excellence. Here you’ll find 200+ masterpiece entries, only the most perfect versions of classics, judged on authenticity, condition, elegance and rarity. A brand spanking new car off the lot will have more imperfections than these beauties. If you think I’m joking, go see for yourself. It’s all held on the 18th fairway of Pebble Beach Golf Links, held on the final Sunday of Monterey Car Week.

General Admission starts at around $575+ additional VIP packages available. Remember, if you’re planning on attending, dress business casual to semi formal. Most people dress elegantly when attending and really get into the atmosphere, think Met Gala of the car world, only cooler, of course. Arrive by 7am as most of the best showcase early with Best of Show awards happening in the evening, making for a long but enjoyable day.

The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering

The Quail, happening at the Quail Lodge & Golf Club in Carmel, California. The event showcases modern exotics and vintage race cars. You might have heard about Monterey Car Week in the past and perhaps have seen images of expensive luxury vehicles parked on a golf course. Those images are of The Quail, a gathering of auto enthusiasts sharing their love of engineering, design and camaraderie. There is live music, entertainment and culinary pavilions. There is judging and a best of show award at the end of the event. The event has themes, like the 50th anniversary of the Porsche 911 Turbo, or the tribute to world rally cars, etc. New luxury cars get unveiled at this event every year as well. Tickets are priced from $4,000+ and can be obtained at the following link https://seatgeek.com/the-quail-a-motorsports-gathering-tickets. Address is 8205 Valley Greens Dr, Carmel-By-The-Sea, CA 93923.

Concorso Italiano

A showcase of vintage classics and modern exotics of Italian origin. It’s more than just a car show, but a celebration of Italian culture, featuring cars, Italian cuisine, fashion, design and art, making it a multi-sensory event. The festival has 800+ cars and motorcycles on display. It takes place on the Bayonet & Blackhorse Golf Course in Seaside, California. It usually takes place on the second Saturday of Monterey Car week in mid-August. A general admission ticket will cost you $310 dollars to attend the event. Address to the event is 1 McClure Way, Seaside, CA 93955. Tickets available at https://www.internationalcarweek.com/

Exotics on Broadway

This is the most exciting free event on the calendar. This event features insane exotics, hyper-cars and modified supercars presented in a festival like atmosphere. This is where you’ll find spectacular Ferraris, Lamborghinis, Koenigsegg’s, Pagani’s, Bugatti’s, the heavy hitters.

Lots of exotics are custom, an abundance of aftermarket tuners adds a nice touch of uniqueness that makes the event unpredictable in terms of what you can expect to find on display. This is the event that draws celebrities, car industry figures and influencers from around the world. Here you’ll find DJ’s, live music, entertainment, food trucks, a lively crowd and plenty of Instagram worthy moments. This is my favorite event, I love the vibe, the types of cars on display happen to be my favorite, and of course because it’s free!

This event alone makes our trip from Sacramento worth it. The event takes place on the second Saturday of Monterey Car Week. It’s 10am to 4pm. Arrive early, it gets packed, and you’ll have more ease to see the cars before peak times of 12pm to 3pm. Parking lots are available but fill up quickly. Be prepared to walk several blocks to the event. Perhaps consider Uber or Lyft to the event. Address is Broadway Avenue, Seaside, CA.

Legends of the Autobahn

As car enthusiasts we sometimes have a preference for cars from specific regions or countries, and if you’re a fan of German engineering (a popular slogan for German vehicles) then you’ll enjoy this event. Legends of the Autobahn features Mercedes, Porsche, Audi, BMW and other German specific built brands and classics. You’ll find concourse level restorations, and sometimes you’ll find unveilings from German automotive brands. You’ll also find vendors, judging and all-around great vibes. The event is typically free. Address is Pacific Grove Golf Links in Pacific Grove, CA.

Porsche Werks Reunion

If you’re a huge Porsche (It’s pronounced Porsh-Ah!) fan like I am, then you’ll absolutely love this event. You’ll find every single type of Porsche you can think of. From classics to modern beauties, you’ll see hundreds of models. I attend to spot any kind of Porsche Turbo I can find, but for me, most Porsche’s look pleasing to the eyes…and ears when they drive by. The event is free to spectators, and you’ll find concourse judging, vendor booths, merchandise, brand representatives, race car drivers, and of course lots of food options. The event takes place at the Monterey Pines Golf Course, Monterey, CA. Address is 1250 Garden Rd, Monterey, CA 93940.

Tips for Arrival and Finding Parking during Monterey Car Week

I’m going to be honest, when it comes to arriving and parking, there are no easy strategies. Monterey isn’t a large city. The cities infrastructure can’t really cope with the festival, as evidenced by the pockets of traffic surrounding the day’s events. It gets tough several blocks away from whatever event you’re attending, so you’ll have to be patient. There are parking lots available but fill up quickly so for most events you’ll be circling for parking spots and parallel parking for the entire week. That’s ok though, because what kind of a car enthusiast would have trouble with parallel parking, right?

The best thing you can do is be an early bird and get parking spots early on before 7am and grab some coffee as the cars begin to roll in. This will drastically improve your experience. You don’t want the headache of parking 10 blocks away from the event. If 7am arrival times aren’t something you can do, there is always the ridesharing option which can work out as a great strategy as well.

Beware of the Traffic During Monterey Car Week

As mentioned above, Monterey experiences a massive influx of cars which the cities infrastructure was not built to handle, however, since the event is only for a week, it’s not the end of the world. Although it gets congested, it’s mostly contained to certain pockets closer to the event locations, making it more manageable. Highway 1 will see the most congestion throughout Monterey Car Week. Try using Carmel Valley Road or Highway 68 as alternatives. Pebble Beach Gates, especially on Sunday during the Concours D’Elegance will have a lot of traffic.

Cannery Row and Downtown Monterey will have pockets of traffic as well due to cruising and car spotting as well. Seaside on Saturday will be a must to avoid if you’re not attending Exotics on Broadway. It will be jam packed with visitors. On the bright side, if you are stuck in traffic, remember, it’s not so bad during Monterey Car Week as you’ll be stuck alongside Ferrari’s, Lambo’s, Konig’s, Pagani’s, and Maserati’s as you move 15 mph.
